SFGate: Daily Dish

Country star Wynonna Judd has shed 60 pounds by 'walking in the wilderness' and meditating.

The former heavyweight singer showed off her slim new look on Tuesday's 'Oprah,' and confessed she 'went to hell and back' in an effort to get healthy.

She says, 'In my darkest hour I had a choice to make -- I could be a victim or a victor - and I just started walking in the wilderness and screaming at God ... and I just kept walking and the next thing I know I like to walk, so I call it meditative walking versus 'I've gotta be in the Olympics'.

'I got some books, I went into a recovery program of just showing up and talking about everything from men to money to food, whatever.'

The "Love Can Build a Bridge" singer adds, "I feel like I finally got it. I turned 45, went through a horrible divorce and I sent my daughter to an empowerment program ... and I lost my family and I gained myself because I was all alone with God. ... I was bitter and resentful. ... I was a walking time bomb.

"I'm in a really good place."

Drew Carey Reverses Type 2 Diabetes The Hard Way

It's an interesting phenomenon that Drew Carey's diabetes seems to have left him once he started eating in a healthier way. Doctors keep telling us that there's no cure for diabetes, but I have personally seen many people completely reverse their symptoms by changing their lifestyle. Are we to say that they didn't really have diabetes in the first place? The article below addresses tthis subject

Drew Carey Reverses Type 2 Diabetes “The Hard Way”

Hollywood is currently a-twitter with the news that Price Is Right star Drew Carey ran away (literally!) from Type 2 diabetes and is now “a new man.”

'I'm not diabetic anymore. No medication needed,' Carey crowed recently. And my, how the entertainment blogs are having a field day with the story. Blogosphere rants are saying things like: “He’s a goddamn liar, because there’s no cure for diabetes!”"

Most doctors maintain there’s no cure, as well.
But here's Drew Carey nonetheless. Symptoms gone. Completely off medications. What more do you need in order to call him cured? Critics claim he’s not really cured. That he’s just "managing his symptoms without drugs."(That's the prevailing medical belief, too.) The only way he'd really be cured, they feel, is if he was able to pig-out on his old diet of donuts, KFC and Big Slurpee’s -- the one that gave diabetes in the first place.
This is crazy. Why should he have immunity to the junky foods that are giving thousands of people Type 2 diabetes and prediabetes every single day? That's not a cure; that's a miracle. My definition of a cure would be anything that returns a diabetic’s metabolic functions to normal without the ongoing need for drugs. In short, a second chance.

Which is what Drew Carey achieved
Now that he's done it, maybe the medical community -- and the 80 million Americans with Type 2 and prediabetes -- will see that the solution to today's diabetes epidemic is right under our nose.

Drew Carey: How I lost 80 pounds
After Drew Carey embarked on a strict regime, he dropped 80 pounds since January
By Sara Hammel, PEOPLE.com July 30, 2010 11:11 a.m. EDT

Drew Carey has been known as a loveable, teddy-bear type as far back as his long-running sitcom The Drew Carey Show. But, he says, being big was a burden – and he had to make a change.

"It sucks being fat, you know," Carey, 52, said Wednesday at the CBS, Showtime and The CW TCA Party in Beverly Hills. "I was diabetic with Type-2 diabetes.”

Not anymore. After Carey embarked on a strict regime, shaving his diet of carbohydrates and hitting the gym religiously, he dropped 80 lbs. since January and says, "I'm not diabetic anymore. No medication needed."

So how’d he do it?

"No carbs," Carey says. "I have cheated a couple times, but basically no carbs, not even a cracker. No bread at all. No pizza, nothing. No corn, no beans, no starches of any kind. Egg whites in the morning or like, Greek yogurt, cut some fruit."

He snacks on fruit, and for dinner he’ll have grilled chicken and steamed vegetables and water. "I don't drink anything but water," he says. "No coffee, no tea, no soda."
Hitting the Gym

Equally important, he says, is keeping up his workouts. His secret: "Lots of cardio. About 45 minutes of cardio, at least 45 minutes of cardio. I've been kind of lazy like lately, so I'm not doing it 6 days a week, but I will be for this next month."

All this discipline has gotten Carey from a size 44 pants to a 33-34, with his goal to lose another 10 lbs. and shrink to a size 32.

"I like being skinny," says Carey. "I was sick of being fat on the camera. Really, I just got sick of it. Once I started losing weight, again, like once I started dropping a couple pant sizes, then it was easy 'cause once you see the results, then you don't wanna stop."

Eating in this manner is really a wonderful way to lose weight and feel better. Both my husband and I have done it in a similar fashion - basically, by following a diet called the "Restart Diet". It's a two week process which takes you from fluids to a health low-carb regimen. We were never hungry and our bodies were trained by the end of the two weeks to not want the carbs. I lost 9 pounds and my hubby lost 11 pounds in that period.

I'll blog more about it later. For now let's just applaud Drew's accomplishment.
